Tool of the Month

What is RO KLEEN?

RO Kleen is a rotary chimney cleaning device that is powered by an electric drill. Although initially devolved for removing glazed creosote, it can also be used for breaking out clay tile flue liners when that becomes necessary to install new liners.

Why was RO Kleen developed?

Many years ago the Chimney sweep industry was faced with a dilemma of not being able to successfully remove glazed creosote. Sweeps were willing to try anything. sand blasting was proven to be effective but the equipment was far to expensive which also made the service very expensive. Chemicals were tried and some worked but they were very messy and also required several applications which also made this process costly as well. Standard Chimney brushes, including good flat wire brushes would not get the gaze out either. There were a host of devices tried including scrapers, crunchers, infrared heaters, space heaters and many other tools too numerous to mention. Here at Countryside we were very busy trying all the aforementioned things none of which seemed to be feasible or affordable. Our reason for wanting any kind of workable tool for glazed creosote removal became a quest. We were tried of writing disclaimers on our inspection forms that stated that even though we had just cleaned someone's chimney there was still enough glazed creosote remaining to support a chimney fire. This fact also had our customers wondering why they had just paid was to not clean their chimney. Something had to be done.

What type of attachments are available for cleaning flues?

Tools for cleaning flues include the glaze Remover, the tool with the chains, the spider which is a rotary brush using steel cables for the bristles, Ro Lite which is used for power sweeping and the cone shaped Unplugger for unplugging plugged flues.

What are the attachments for breaking out clay tiles?

Tools for breaking out tiles include the single tile breaker, which is used to break out 8x8 tiles, the double tile breaker, which is twice as heavy and is used to break out 12x12 tiles. we also have a Bigfoot for breaking out larger tiles.

What type of rods are used with the RO Kleen system?

Our rods are made of spring steel and have a unique coupling arrangement that provides a positive latch that does not slip or unlatch until desired.

What lengths do the rods come in?

The rods come in 2 , 2.5, and 5 foot lengths. There is also a starter rod which is 8 inches which is used in the drill chuck to attach the other rods to.

Can the rods go through offsets?

Because the rods are spring steel they are capable of going through multiple offsets and have been used at lengths greater than 70 feet.

What are some safety considerations when using RO Kleen?

The same precautions that are used with any rotary device should also be used when using RO Kleen. Never wear loose clothing or use this equipment if you have a long beard or long hair that could become entangled. Also never wear rubber gloves and always wear eye protection. As always extreme care should always be used when working near power lines as the rods are made of metal and will conduct electricity. Avoid electric shock hazard and always check foe electric lines before starting work.
